What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is the science of human mechanics.
It is a system of healthcare that deals largely with the structural and mechanical problems of the
body- framework (muscles, bones, joints). In short the, 'musculo-skeletal system'.
A Brief History.
Osteopathy was founded by an american doctor (Andrew Taylor Still) in the latter half of the 19th century. Eventually the 'Osteopaths Act of 1993' gave Osteopathy the status it deserved in the UK. Osteopathy today is a well established professions and is respected and recognised not only by its patients but also within the medical profession.
Osteopaths are regulated by the General Osteopathic Council.
Only practitioners meeting the high standards of safety and competency are eligible to join this register.
Training and Qualifications
Osteopaths undertake a demanding four/five year honours degree programme covering anatomy, physiology, pathology, biomechanics and diagnostic clinical methods, underpinned by thorough clinical training. This training
enables us not only to diagnose and treat medical conditions /injuries with regard to the musculo-skeletal system, it also helps us to recognise non-musculo-skeletal causes of complaints.
Osteopaths / General Practitioners/Consultants
You do not need a referral from your GP to go and see an Osteopath. Most Osteopaths, however, enjoy a good relationship with their local GP's and will advise patients to consult their GP if necessary. This may be especially the case if osteopathic treament is not appropriate and there are other concerns regarding the patients' health.

All patient information held by an Osteopath is confidential and no communication, including with other health care practitioners, is possible without the patients' written consent.
